Het album staat vol met melancholie, zelfreflectie en een sterke kritische blik op de Amerikaanse cultuur. De titel is een verwijzing naar de beroemde Amerikaanse kunstenaar Norman Rockwell, die bekend stond om zijn schilderijen van een bijna perfecte Amerikaanse samenleving. Lana draait deze droom echter om en laat de donkere kant van diezelfde cultuur zien. Het album behandelt niet alleen persoonlijke thema\u2019s zoals liefde en verlies, maar kijkt ook naar bredere maatschappelijke kwesties, zoals de onbereikbaarheid van de \u201cAmerikaanse Droom\u201d en de leegte die daaruit voortkomt.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading has-large-font-size\"><strong>Muziek en Productie<\/strong><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Muzikaal gezien is <em>Norman Fucking Rockwell!<\/em> anders dan veel van Lana\u2019s eerdere werk. Het album heeft een rustigere en meer gedempte sfeer, met veel gebruik van piano\u2019s, akoestische gitaren en subtiele elektronica. Dit maakt het geluid dromerig en bijna hypnotiserend. De productie is minimalistisch op sommige momenten, maar vaak heel gelaagd, met een focus op de sfeer die de muziek oproept. Dit past goed bij de aard van het album.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Thematiek en Concept<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Het belangrijkste thema op <em>Norman Fucking Rockwell!<\/em> is de kritiek op de Amerikaanse Droom. Lana neemt de visie van een perfect Amerika, vaak voorgesteld door Rockwell\u2019s schilderijen, en laat zien hoe die droom eigenlijk een illusie is. In veel nummers reflecteert ze op de onbereikbaarheid van dit ideaal en de pijn die daarmee gepaard gaat. Dit komt goed naar voren in het nummer <em>\u201cThe Greatest\u201d<\/em>, waar Lana haar zorgen uit over de culturele en politieke situatie in de Verenigde Staten.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Top 3<\/strong>:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>3. Norman fucking rockwell<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Het titelnummer van Norman Fucking Rockwell is voor mij een van de meest gelaagde en complexe nummers van het album. De titel zelf hint al waar het nummer over gaat. Norman Rockwell, de Amerikaanse illustrator die vaak ideaalbeelden van het Amerikaanse leven schetste, wordt hier contrast gegeven met de chaos en imperfectie van de werkelijkheid, en dat is precies wat Lana doet in het nummer. Het nummer heeft iets episch en cinematic, maar tegelijkertijd heeft het een intieme, bijna kwetsbare sfeer door de minimalistische, maar toch rijke instrumentatie. Lana&#8217;s stem lijkt zacht, maar in de manier waarop ze bepaalde woorden benadrukt, klinkt er een zekere scherpte. Vooral het refrein vind ik het krachtigste en mooiste van heel het nummer<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe title=\"Lana Del Rey - Norman F***ing Rockwell (Official Music Video)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/soRjcajliHE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>2. California<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In \u201cCalifornia\u201d cre\u00ebert Lana Del Rey een dromerige, maar ook bittersweet sfeer die perfect past bij de Californische levensstijl die ze beschrijft. De track ademt de zon, de vrijheid en de charme van de West Coast, maar tegelijkertijd is er een onderliggende melancholie die niet te negeren is. Lana zingt over de verleidingen van de staat en hoe ze zich aangetrokken voelt tot die wereld maar ook dat die niet helemaal openstaat voor haar. De productie van het nummer ondersteunt dit gevoel heel goed. Het heeft die dromerige, bijna hypnotiserende sfeer die je meteen in die Californische zonnestralen trekt, maar er hangt een lichte melancholie in de lucht. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-medium-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>1. the greatest<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Greatest is een nummer dat je meteen meeneemt in een mix van nostalgie en verdriet, iets wat Lana Del Rey echt heel goed kan. In dit nummer kijkt ze terug op een periode waarin de wereld zoveel &#8216;beter&#8217; leek, toen alles nog vol beloftes zat. Maar terwijl de track zich ontvouwt, wordt het duidelijk dat het onvermijdelijke verlies centraal staan. Het is alsof Lana kijkt naar de tijd dat zo goed als voorbij is, de \u201cgoede oude tijd\u201d, en hoe moeilijk het is om afscheid te nemen van iets dat ooit zo waardevol leek.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-large-font-size wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Conclusie<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Norman Fucking Rockwell heeft voor mij een bijzondere plek ingenomen als een album dat zowel vertrouwd als verrassend is. Lana Del Rey lijkt altijd in staat te zijn om precies die gevoelens van nostalgie en verlangen te vangen die je niet altijd kunt verwoorden.
